The Sharks revealed on Thursday that forward Adam Burish had successful back surgery. There is no timetable for his return, but according to a team source, Burish expected to be out for “months and not weeks.”

Burish was hurt in the Sharks’ first preseason game on Sep. 16 in Vancouver, and has not skated since. He apparently tried to work through the pain, but it was decided this week that surgery was required.

The Sharks signed Burish to a four-year, $7.4 million contract on July 1, 2012. In 46 games last season, the 30-year-old had one goal and two assists for three points and 25 penalty minutes. He played in six playoff games, but missed the majority of the second round series with Los Angeles due to a broken hand.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles.
