The Raiders' 90-man roster split time during Friday’s exhibition victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Most starters made cameos in the preseason opener, while second-teamers played a little longer.
Rookie linebacker Cory James worked up a sweat. The sixth-round pick took 51 defensive snaps and 15 more on special team, a significant sum trying to show well in his first NFL season.
The Colorado State product didn’t just play a lot. He also played well. He had five tackles, including one for a loss, and a quarterback pressure from the middle linebacker spot. Analytics site Pro Football Focus gave him the team’s highest grade in run defense, a number certainly impacted by his opportunity volume.
Regardless, James flashed and played fast. That’s key for an important position without significant depth behind starter Ben Heeney.
James played all over the front seven in college, but was best as an edge rusher. He’s in the middle now, and feels comfortable with what he’s asked to do.
“I think I’m adjusting well,” James said. “Every day I’m getting better and better, and I’m leaning on the veterans to help me understand the scheme. They’ve been great. I’m just try to learn fast and play fast.”
