NAPA – Raiders safety Karl Joseph drifted back in coverage, read quarterback Derek Carr right and took off once the pass took flight. He stepped in front of Michael Crabtree’s route, skied high and intercepted the pass in midair.
Carr wasn’t even mad. His reaction came with a wry smile: “Finally.”
He doesn’t like throwing picks – Carr has thrown precious few this camp -- but the “who” and the “how” made this one acceptable.
It was the first-round selection’s first interception of camp, and it was a pretty one.
“He jumped five feet off the ground and snagged it 10 feet in the air,” Carr said. “I’m good with that, especially if he makes plays like that for us. It makes me excited. I never want to turn the ball over, but I was extremely happy when he made that play because, if he’s not just a hitter and he can also make plays like that, it’s nothing but good for us.”
Carr has been impressed by Joseph thus far.
“He has done a great job,” the quarterback said. “Reggie Nelson (and Raiders secondary coaches) are doing a great job with him. He’s going to be a great player for us.
“Hopefully he won’t pick me again. I never threw at (Charles Woodson) and I don’t like throwing at Reggie. He’s not there yet, and I’m going to keep throwing at him. (laughing) Hopefully one day he’ll get there.”
Catch of the day: Wednesday’s honor belongs to Seth Roberts, who beat his man deep and raced to secure a Matt McGloin pass down the right sideline.
Edwards Jr. increases activity: Defensive lineman Mario Edwards Jr. participated in some team drills for the first time since hurting his hand in a fight with left guard Kelechi Osemele. The ailment was not serious, and allowed him to return after a couple days limited to individual work.
Other notes from Raiders practice:
-- Undrafted rookie RB Jalen Richard missed his first practice of training camp on Wednesday for undisclosed reasons. If it’s due to injury, it might put his eligibility for Friday’s exhibition in jeopardy. His status is unknown at this time.
-- S Jimmy Hall missed his third straight practice, though he did some side work for a second straight day.
-- FB Marcel Reece had a few nice catches, including a touchdown scored on a slant route in front of S Dewey McDonald. He has been effective as a receiver, though he isn’t in the mix running the football.
-- TJ Carrie blocked a field goal late in practice.
-- P Marquette King has a strong day during a practice with a heavy special-teams emphasis. That fits in with a strong camp where he has shown off a powerful leg.
