ALAMEDA – Raiders interim head coach Tony Sparano conceded Thursday that defensive end LaMarr Woodley’s biceps injury will sideline him for a long term.
A source confirmed Wednesday that Woodley had a biceps tear which put his season in jeopardy.
“It’s long term. I’m not going to sit here and tell you that it’s not,” Sparano said. “We’ll make an announcement when we’re ready to. We don’t have to do that right now.”
The Raiders are expected to announce that Woodley will be placed on season-ending injured reserve before Sunday’s game at the Cleveland Browns.
While Benson Mayowa will see extra action, C.J. Wilson should start if Justin Tuck returns from knee injury.
Wilson has played well in recent weeks, with 12 tackles, two sacks and four quarterback pressures. His snap count has steadily increased, and is ready for a heavy workload on Sunday.
“I go into every game thinking as a starter,” Wilson said. “I know that I’ll be asked to do more and I’m ready for it. I feel comfortable with my role in this scheme and what I’m able to do. Losing LaMarr is a big blow. He was a positive influence on our D-line and the defense as a whole. We’ll miss him, but I’ll be ready to step in and play.”
Some other injury notes from Raiders practice:
-- Sparano said that end Justin Tuck looked better in practice despite an early hiccup during individual drills open to the press. He also believed fullback Marcel Reece looked better on Thursday. Both players have been limited in the last week-plus.
-- Right tackle Menelik Watson has practiced some on the left in recent days, most likely as a backup plan should Donald Penn get hurt. Watson seems set to start at right tackle though when Khalif Barnes is healthy again.
-- Cornerback Carlos Rogers returned to practice in a limited role after skipping Wednesday’s workout.
-- The Raiders hope tight end David Ausberry’s won’t be extremely long-term. He has a foot injury.
