ALAMEDA – Raiders safety Charles Woodson ramped up his practice activity on Thursday, lending credence to the prospect that he may play Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.
The veteran was suited up with a helmet during portions of practice open to the press, but was limited during the practice.
Woodson was considered out on Wednesday, nursing a right shoulder dislocated during the season opener against Cincinnati.
Woodson had campaigned coaches to let him practice and play. At the least, the coaches are testing him to see what he can handle. Thursday’s practice was not conducted in pads, and it’s uncertain how many team activities he was involved in, if at all.
“He looked OK,” defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. said. "Limited is the word that we’re working with here.”
With just a quick Friday walk-thru remaining in the practice week, this was an important day for Woodson’s playing prospects. It remains uncertain whether Woodson will play Sunday or miss his first game since returning to the Raiders in 2013.
“It’s still early in the week and we don’t have to make a determination yet,” Norton said. “Every injury is different. Everybody is different and deals with pain differently. We’ll just have to follow this day by day.”
The Raiders are also preparing backups to play. Larry Asante should step in for Nate Allen, now on short-term injured reserve with a torn MCL. Asante has been a quality sub since the preseason, and the Raiders have confidence in what he can do.
Other injury notes:
-- Running back Roy Helu was a healthy scratch on Sunday against the Bengals. Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave fell victim to a numbers game among active players.
-- Fullback Jamize Olwale and defensive tackle Justin Ellis remain out with ankle injuries, making it less likely that they’ll play against Baltimore.
