ALAMEDA -– Raiders rookie tight end Clive Walford has been back a few days now after missing most of the preseason. He’s obviously behind schedule, as anyone of his experience level would be after such a setback.
He’s trying to absorb as much as possible in a short time. While he can have a specific package to contribute right away, he’ll have to know everything as Mychal Rivera’s primary backup. Should injury strike, Walford must be ready for anything.
“Ideally I think (a smaller, expanding role) would be the way to go with a guy that has been hurt for so long, but we don’t have that luxury. He has to be ready to go,” Raiders offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said.
“You never know when another tight end may need a shoelace here or there and he’s got to step in. Each and every task and what to do and how to adjust to the defensive front. Clive has a lot of work and he’s working hard to get caught up because we’re counting on him.”
Holmes in great physical shape
Receiver Andre Holmes missed a ton of time this preseason, roughly three weeks due to a fractured left hand. That seems like a big blow, especially considering Holmes came back the week before Sunday’s regular-season opener.
It was lessened by Holmes’ injury site. That kept him in good physical condition while sidelined but, when it comes to the Raiders’ new scheme, he has some catching up to do.
“He does, he does,” offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said. “Fortunately with his injury, he was still able to keep his legs fresh and run because it was a hand. So he can jump back in a little bit more readily than somebody that might have a hamstring or a knee where you can’t travel across the ground.”
Holmes is expected to be the fourth receiver on the depth chart, but his knack for snatching deep passes from the air should keep him in the mix right away.
Holmes led the last year’s team with 693 receiving yards and expects to be a factor in an upgraded receiver corps.
