CLEVELAND –- Defensive end LaMarr Woodley and safety Usama Young are out for the year, yet both remain on the Raiders injury report.
That won’t be the case next week.
Interim head coach Tony Sparano said both players will be placed on season-ending injured reserve before Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns.
They’ll be replaced by internally.
Practice squad players will likely get promoted, though the Raiders could also activate cornerback DJ Hayden off the physically unable to perform list. As usual, Sparano kept his leanings internal.
“He’s coming along good, and there are no real issues with the injury or anything like that,” Sparano said after Friday’s practice. “Most of DJ’s stuff has been from not playing and anything like that. So, just normal, everyday not playing soreness, but he’s good to go.”
Defensive end Shelby Harris is likely to be promoted for Woodley. There is no straight swap for Young, so Hayden or another defensive back could rise up.
The Raiders are thin at safety, with Charles Woodson and Brandian Ross as starters with Jonathan Dowling in reserve. Chimdi Chekwa has also played some safety and could be an emergency option until reinforcements can be found.
Some other Raiders injury notes:
-- Defensive end Justin Tuck was held out of Friday’s practice, per Sparano’s decision. Tuck pulled up lame during an individual drill on Thursday, but he finished the practice on a limited basis. He was listed as questionable on the team’s injury report.
-- Khalif Barnes is questionable but is expected to play, though Sparano didn’t say if he or Menelik Watson would start at right tackle.
-- Receiver Vincent Brown (hamstring) did not practice on Friday after working on Wednesday and Thursday in a limited role. He was ruled out of Sunday’s game.
