ALAMEDA -– A Raiders media relations staffer read the team’s participation report after Wednesday’s practice, an act that will be customary before Jack Del Rio press conferences throughout the regular season.
Adam Klionsky wasn’t talking very long.
Defensive end/linebacker Benson Mayowa was the only Raider skipping practice, with knee soreness lingering from Thursday’s exhibition finale against the Seattle Seahawks.
There’s little concern for previously injured players. Receiver Andre Holmes (hand), defensive end Justin Tuck (calf) and tight end Clive Walford (knee) were full participants in Wednesday. Barring a setback, they should be ready to go on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
While Walford is healthy, how much can he contribute early on? The expected Week 1 starter is now No. 3 on the depth chart, fair placement after missing all but two practices and one game of the preseason.
Missing such work volume is major for a rookie.
“I don’t know if he’s completely up to speed,” head coach Jack Del Rio said, “but he’s had a couple of good days at practice. We’ll see how the week finishes.”
Walford is confident in his ability to catch up, and he only needs to master a little to carve a role. With Mychal Rivera and Lee Smith available, Walford won’t be asked to do too much.
