ALAMEDA – Raiders center Rodney Hudson played 40 straight games before a sprained ankle snapped the streak against the Minnesota Vikings. He made a case to play in that game, but respected a coaches’ decision to hold him out.
“I had to keep that in mind myself and go out and try to do the best I can,” Hudson said. “The best decision was made for the team.”
That decision put Hudson in greater position to play on Sunday at the Detroit Lions. After practicing in a limited role Thursday and Friday, Hudson’s in position to do exactly that.
He was listed as questionable on the team’s official injury report, which was released on Friday afternoon. Neither Hudson nor head coach Jack Del Rio would commit to Hudson playing, though it seems likely the Raiders will get their high-priced, top-flight interior lineman back in a key contest.
“Everything is getting better every day so I’m going in the right direction,” Hudson said. “From day one everything has been going in the right direction. I’m just going to try to keep that going.”
The Raiders certainly hope Hudson starts another prolonged playing streak. While backup Tony Bergstrom fared well in his stead, the Raiders are clearly a better team with Hudson at the center spot.
“When I missed the last game I wasn’t thinking about a streak,” Hudson said. “Honestly, I didn’t even know that was the number. My goal is to always be available to help the team in the best way I can.”
Tight end Lee Smith is a tough guy who wants to help the team Sunday, but it’s unlikely after he missed the practice week with a wrist injury. It’s been supported with a brace the last few days.
He is considered doubtful to play in Detroit, but he’ll travel with the team and see if he improves to the point that he can play.
