An award that honors the big uglies on both sides of the ball is the latest to release its preseason roll call.
Released through the Football Writers Association of America, the Outland Trophy announced Friday that 70 players have been named to the award’s preseason watch list. The Outland, named after the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at Penn at the turn of the 20th century, has been awarded since 1946 and honors only interior linemen on offense or defense are eligible for the award; ends are not eligible.
The SEC (12) led all conferences in watch listers, followed by the Big Ten (11), ACC (10), Pac-12 (10), Big 12 (6). The remaining conferences are Group of Five leagues: American Athletic (4), Conference USA (4), Mountain West (4), Mid-American (3) and Sun Belt (2). There were also four linemen from independents who made the list.
The preseason list includes 22 offensive tackles, 20 offensive guards, 17 defensive tackles and 11 centers.
In mid-November the award will announce its semifinalists. Five days later, a group of three finalists will be announced, with the 2016 Outland Trophy being awarded Dec. 8 at the Home Depot College Football Awards.
Stanford’s Joshua Garnett was the 2015 winner of the honor.
