Sacramento Kings star center Demarcus Cousins has been in talks with the team and the two parties are reportedly close to a contract extension, a source told ESPN.
According to the source, a deal could be done before the Kings start training camp next week, which would be well before the Oct. 31 deadline extension deadline for 2010 first round picks.
This news comes just hours after the announcement that Shaquille O'Neal has purchased a minority stake in the team.
Cousins may be looking for a max extension similar to point guard John Wall who re-upped with Wizards during the offseason at $80 million over five years.
But whether or not Cousins will command that lofty price remains to be seen after three somewhat tumultuous season with the Kings.
The 23-year-old center averaged 17.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game in 2012-2013 season, but was the league leader in technical fouls with 17.
