SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants did not make a trade on Thursday, but they will have at least one new player on the roster when they begin a 10-game road trip Friday night at Citi Field.
Dan Uggla did not travel with the team to New York after Wednesday’s game and is contemplating whether he wants to report back to Triple-A Fresno in an effort to get his timing, Giants GM Brian Sabean said.
Although no roster move has been made, Sabean said the Giants would have a new infielder replace Uggla on the roster Friday. It could be Matt Duffy, who has been tearing it up all year for Double-A Richmond.

How does Sabean plan to work it at second base, after efforts to acquire one fell short prior to Thursday’s non-waiver trade deadline?
“It’s going to be a work in progress,” he said. “That’s the only way I can answer it, and it might be series to series.”

The Giants have used seven different players at second base this season, and they have combined to hit .176/.259/.275. Joe Panik and Joaquin Arias the only two of those seven still on the current roster. Marco Scutaro is on the DL again and does not hold much hope of being a second-half factor. Ehire Adrianza also is on the DL with a hamstring strain.
Uggla was 0 for 11 with six strikeouts and committed three errors in four games.
