Former Giants 2012 All-Star and current Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera had a benign tumor removed from his spine last month after reporting back pain. The previously suspended outfielder has been out since Aug. 2 recovering from continuing left knee soreness.
The tumor on Cabrera’s spine helps explain the numerous leg injuries he had this year in leading to a sub-par inaugural season with the Blue Jays. Cabrera hit .279/.322/.360 with three home runs and 30 RBI in 88 games this season.
The procedure occurred on Aug. 30 of last month, with Cabrera expected to be ready for Opening Day 2014. Next year will be the final year of the former 2012 All-Star MVP’s two-year, 16 million dollar contract.
