Peavy pitched well enough to win and he busted his tail on the bases to score the tying run in the fifth inning. But Angel Pagan couldn’t make a play on Aramis Ramirez’s double over his head in the sixth, Khris Davis followed by flaring a tiebreaking double down the line and Peavy had to stew over his 12th loss in his last 18 starts.
The Giants lost two of three in Milwaukee.
Starting pitching report
It did not start well for Peavy, who got knocked around the park while allowing a run in the first inning. But Hunter Pence fought the poor visibility in the outfield and used go-go-gadget arms to catch Ramirez’s deep drive to limit the damage.
Peavy settled down from there and pitched effectively despite working hard to put away a patient Brewers lineup. He allowed three runs on nine hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings, and left runners at second and third in the sixth for Juan Gutierrez.
It was the same story in the end. Peavy’s winless stretch hit 18 starts and he didn’t get enough support. He entered having received 2.82 runs of support per game with the Red Sox and Giants this season, the worst for any starter in the major leagues.
Bullpen report
Gutierrez spared Peavy’s ERA and the Giants bullpen performed well with 2 1/3 scoreless innings to give the offense a chance to rally.
At the plate
Wily Peralta combined a power fastball with a generous strike zone and the Giants weren’t able to create enough opportunities.
Pagan, in is first game off the DL, chopped and dinked his way into two singles, but it took Peavy reaching on a third-strike wild pitch to start their only scoring rally in the fifth. Peavy took second on Pagan’s seeing-eye chopper, then hustled home from second base on Pence’s single. It was the third run Peavy has scored since 2009, when he was last in the National League with the San Diego Padres.
The Giants struck out 12 times. Brandon Belt, who had a four-strikeout game on Wednesday, was given the day off reportedly because he had headaches.
In field
Aramis Ramirez and Jean Segura made diving plays as the Brewers infield had another impressive game.
Pablo Sandoval played his 62nd consecutive errorless game at third base. The major league record is 99, held by Jeff Cirillo and John Wehner.
Pagan didn’t take the smoothest route to a deep drive in the eighth, but recovered to make a dust-raising catch on the track.

The Giants are 0-4 in AL parks this season and will try for a turnaround when they begin a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium on Friday. Madison Bumgarner (13-8, 3.21 ERA) takes the mound against Royals left-hander Jason Vargas (8-5, 3.69). First pitch is scheduled for 5:10 p.m. PDT. It’ll be Tim Hudson (8-8, 2.74) against right-hander James Shields on Saturday and Tim Lincecum (9-7, 4.22) against left-hander Danny Duffy (6-10, 2.39) on Sunday.
