SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants seldom gamble with the health of their starting pitchers, and they won’t try to hustle Matt Cain back into the rotation.
The Giants will skip Cain’s turn on Monday against the Chicago Cubs, manager Bruce Bochy said following the club's 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins Saturday night. Yusmeiro Petit will start in Can's place.
Cain threw fewer than 20 pitches off a bullpen mound Saturday afternoon but didn’t appear to approach maximum effort. He has a Grade 1 strain of his right hamstring he sustained on the last pitch he threw in the third inning Wednesday at Coors Field.
Bochy said there was no need to rush Cain. But they do believe he might be OK after missing just one start, so they aren’t placing him on the disabled list. If over the next few days it becomes apparent that Cain would require more than one skipped start, then the DL would come into play.
