Dan Uggla’s tenure with the Giants came to an official end Friday when the club gave the veteran second baseman his unconditional release.
Uggla had refused an assignment to Triple-A Fresno, where the Giants had hoped he might go to get at-bats and try to fix his swing. He played just four games for the Giants and was 0 for 11 with a walk, a run scored and six strikeouts while committing three errors.
It was the first time a Giants position player went hitless in a season (with at least 12 plate appearances) since Calvin Murray went 0 for 12 in 2002.
Uggla was designated for assignment on Aug. 1 along with outfielder Tyler Colvin, who cleared waivers and was outrighted to Fresno on Friday.
