Giants poised to skip Barry Zito's start in Arizona

DENVER – A Barry Zito start on the road? The Giants have every reason to swerve around it like a shredded tire in the fast lane.

And it looks like they will.

The game notes list Sunday’s starter at Arizona as TBA, although Giants manager Bruce Bochy acknowledged his choices were Zito or moving up right-hander Yusmeiro Petit to pitch on regular rest.

Given the way Petit threw 20 of 26 first-pitch strikes in Tuesday’s victory at Coors Field, the decision appears clear. The Giants can gerrymander the rotation the rest of the way, assuring that if Zito starts any more games, it’ll be at AT&T Park.

The club is 0-10 and Zito has a 9.41 ERA in his 10 starts away from AT&T Park this season. He hasn’t won a game anywhere since May 30, and over his last six starts, he’s allowed 27 runs in just 23 2/3 innings.

Bochy said he would make the decision public after Wednesday’s game, after he told Petit and Zito what would happen.
