SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants emptied another spot on their 40-man roster on Friday, hours before the start of free agency. Outfielder Juan Perez cleared waivers and was outrighted to the minors.
The move comes two days after the Giants opted not to pick up options for outfielders Nori Aoki and Marlon Byrd. The club now has just five outfielders on the 40-man: Starters Hunter Pence and Angel Pagan, valuable reserve Gregor Blanco, and rookies Jarrett Parker and Mac Williamson.
Perez had an injury-marred season across two levels. An Achilles injury halted his Triple-A season and a torn oblique ended his big league season after a late call-up.
The veteran planned to rehab most of the offseason, but on his Instagram page he announced that he will play winter ball in the Dominican Republic.
Perez had a career-best.282 average in 22 games for the Giants in 2015. In three seasons with San Francisco, he has hit .224 with 26 runs, 13 RBI, three stolen bases and two home runs.
