BOSTON -- Hunter Strickland was one of many Giants to go out to the Green Monster on Monday afternoon, but his visit was a bit different. Strickland went and found the same opening where he took a photo eight years ago.
"That was awesome," he said. "It's cool to be back where it all started."
The Giants scooped Strickland up after Pittsburgh let him go, but his career actually started here, as a pitching prospect in Boston's organization. An 18th-round pick in the 2007 draft, Strickland spent his early professional seasons dreaming of pitching at Fenway Park.
He came here for a prospect game while pitching for the affiliate in Lowell. On Monday, Strickland tried to go find the signature he left that day but inside the Monster that's a tough task. Back in the clubhouse, Strickland said he would dig up the original photo on the laptop to get a better idea of exactly where he signed. Before that, he hopes to do something he never got to do for the Red Sox: pitch at Fenway Park.
"I was a starting pitcher back then and I wasn't the starter in that (prospects) game so I was just charting pitches," he said. "I didn't get an opportunity to play in that game, but I can't wait."
--- The rehabbing players were set back a day because Triple-A Sacramento was rained out Monday in New Orleans. Joe Panik will play five innings, but Hunter Pence was a late scratch in Game 1 of the River Cats' doubleheader.
Panik is scheduled to go five, seven and then nine. Because he missed a game Monday, manager Bruce Bochy is unsure if Panik will be ready to join the Giants in New York.
--- Madison Bumgarner probably won't hit for himself on Friday at Yankee Stadium, Bochy said. With a deeper bench, Bochy is aiming to put a left-hander in the lineup to face Masahiro Tanaka. He also noted that it's supposed to be steaming in New York, and Bochy would like Bumgarner to put all his energy on pitching.
--- Trevor Brown is scheduled to catch Matt Cain tomorrow, with Buster Posey DHing. Brown was my latest podcast guest and he told some cool stories about calling games from the bench and getting pranked by an umpire. You can stream it here or download it on iTunes here.
