WASHINGTON D.C. -- Josh Osich (elbow) threw a bullpen session today at Nationals Park and all went well. He could start a rehab assignment Sunday or Monday. Cory Gearrin is already on a rehab assignment and he has looked sharp, but there's no timetable for his return.
While those two have been on the DL, the Giants have added one bullpen arm (Will Smith), moved a starter to relief (Jake Peavy) and elevated a rookie (Derek Law) who might have been the likeliest to be optioned a few weeks ago. So, what happens with Osich and Gearrin? It wasn't long ago that both were pitching in the eighth for Bruce Bochy, who acknowledged he's going to have some tough decisions to make.
"I would say that's a good problem," Bochy said, smiling.
Gearrin is out of options, so you figure the Giants will find some way to get him up here when his rehab clock runs out. Osich can be optioned and then return on Sept. 1. We'll see what they do.
There's one more player who will certainly be here on Sept. 1 but maybe not before: Mac Williamson hopes to be ready once the 15-day DL stint is up, but it seems a lock that Williamson gets optioned given the rest of the roster math.
--- Speaking of roster moves, Ramiro Peña cleared waivers and joined Triple-A Sacramento. Grant Green and Ruben Tejada had previously cleared waivers so all three remain with the organization.
--- Bochy on Nate Schierholtz, who was popped for using a PED: "That's a shame. I don't have anything else to say, really. I feel bad that these guys are still getting caught. These are pretty hefty suspensions now. It makes it that much tougher on a player to try to come back." Given his age (32) and fact that he was a free agent already, you figure this might be the end for the former Giant.
--- Bochy is going to give each of the regulars a day off on this trip, and today was Brandon Belt's turn with lefty Gio Gonzalez on the mound. Angel Pagan is scheduled to be off tomorrow. With Posey playing first the day after being off, Bochy can use him the rest of this series (it's day-night on Saturday-Sunday) and have him catch Madison Bumgarner.
--- Bochy moved Eduardo Nuñez to the No. 3 spot today in his continued search to find more offensive production. "Three speed guys at the top, so hopefully we can manufacture some runs," he said.
--- I wrote about Matt Moore's pitch mix in yesterday's game story. He was basically all fastball-curveball, but he said it won't usually be just two pitches. He threw three changeups yesterday (the offering around 87-88 mph) but said it's usually much more.
