LOS ANGELES -- Bruce Bochy likes to say that if things aren't working, you make a change. Any change. The lineup actually has kind of worked over the past week if you take out the Noah Syndergaard game, but the team still isn't winning. So, there's a big change.
Brandon Belt was moved down to the No. 7 spot against left-hander Rich Hill, and while he'll hit higher against righties, Bochy said it won't be the three-spot for now. Buster Posey will hit third for a stretch.
"We'll tweak it here a little bit," Bochy said. "We scored some runs yesterday and swung the bats well, but I just think we're better off going with the hot hands ... We'll see how it goes."
Belt's OPS hitting third (.803) is lower than his OPS for the season (.866) but he still leads the team in most hitting categories.
"He has always stated that's where he likes to hit, and he's a good candidate to hit third because he does get on base and the numbers show that," Bochy said. "With his struggles in the second half, it was time to make a change."
Belt is batting just .214 since the break and his slugging percentage has dropped more than 150 points.
--- Cory Gearrin struggled again last night, but Bochy said he's not still hurt. The Giants think that if anything, Gearrin feels too good. "Sometimes when you're a little stronger, you lose sink," Bochy said.
Getting through that sixth-seventh range in close games has been a big problem, but a trade deadline addition might be the solution. Bochy was pleased with Will Smith's stuff and command last night, when
he cut through the heart of the Dodgers' lineup.
