SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- With Angel Pagan ailing and Hunter Pence sidelined for at least the first couple weeks of the season, the Giants are looking at all options to beef up their outfield production. The conversations include Brandon Belt, and two young players -- Adam Duvall and Matt Duffy -- who are infielders by trade.
Pagan had two injections in the facet joint in his lower back and is not expected to resume baseball activities until Sunday at the earliest. Manager Bruce Bochy said Pagan could play Monday or Tuesday in a perfect world, but that would be asking a lot. Faced with the possibility that they may open the season without two of their starting outfielders, the Giants have talked of getting creative.
Belt has 35 big league starts in the outfield but both came in his first two seasons. He has played just one inning in the outfield the past two seasons, and that came in a pinch when the Giants ran out of options one night in Milwaukee. Belt has not taken fly balls the past two seasons because the Giants have preferred him to focus on first base, but when asked Friday if Belt was a "first baseman, period," Bochy smiled and said it's "more of a comma."
"It's currently being discussed," he said.
Duvall, a third baseman, has taken fly balls in the outfield during workouts and got a little bit of experience there in winter ball. He is one of the most powerful hitters in the organization, but has struggled defensively at third base this spring. Duffy is hitting .385 this spring but has an uphill climb in his bid to make the club as a backup middle infielder. Joaquin Arias is finishing out a two-year deal and Ehire Adrianza is out of options. Duffy already can play second, short and third, and said last week that he would try the outfield if asked.
Bochy said that the Giants are focused on internal options right now. While Belt, Duvall and Duffy are intriguing, the more likely scenario is that the Giants turn to some combination of Gregor Blanco, Juan Perez, Gary Brown, Justin Maxwell and Travis Ishikawa.
"You don't know what's out there (for trades) or available, so the only choice we have is to look internally at what we have here," Bochy said. "A lot depends on where we are at with Angel before I jump to any conclusions on what we do. We'll see where we're at in another week."
