Since being selected in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft by the Giants, Phil Bickford has moved quickly.
Evidence of his fast progression was his selection to the 2016 MLB Futures Game.
Bickford got his chance to face some of the best prospects in baseball in the fifth inning Sunday in San Diego. Called on to pitch for the US Futures team, the first batter he faced, Rangers prospect Ronald Guzman, lined out to center. Yandy Diaz, an Indians prospect, singled to right. With one out, Bickford struck out Yankees prospect Gary Sanchez. Royals prospect Jorge Bonifacio walked. But Bickford got out of the jam by striking out Rays prospect Willy Adames.
Drafted with the No. 18 overall pick last year, Bickford is 5-4 with a 2.45 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 77 innings pitched between Low-A Augusta and High-A San Jose this season.
Bickford entered the season as the Giants' No. 3 prospect.
