Willie Mays often made highlight-reel plays look routine, none more famous than the play that has simply been dubbed "The Catch."
Exactly 62 years ago, Mays tracked down a deep drive by first baseman Vic Wertz in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series between the Cleveland Indians and the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds.
"The Catch" came in the eighth inning with runners at first and second and nobody out and the game tied 2-2. Two innings later, the Giants walked off in the 10th inning and went on to sweep the Indians in four games.
Mays hit .302 with a .384 on-base percentage and .557 slugging percentage over his 22-year career, amassing 3,283 hits, 660 home runs and 338 stolen bases.
Mays, 85, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979. Rookie of the Year in 1951, Mays was a two-time MVP, a 20-time All-Star (including 19 consecutive selections from 1954 to 1972), an 11-time Gold Glover, and a world champion -- thanks in large part to his defensive gem 62 years ago.
