Here's news that shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody: The New York Yankees were in on Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel.
Before the Cubs dealt the pair of starters to Oakland on the Fourth of July, Yankees GM Brian Cashman said he was having conversations with Theo Epstein's front office throughout the entire ordeal.
In the end, the Yankees just didn't have the prospects that could match Oakland's package led by Addison Russell, one of the top young players in the game today.
"I don't think [the Cubs] could've done a better deal than what they did in terms of that haul," Cashman told WFAN's Mike Francesa Monday. "I think we were certainly in the arena. The fact that Theo was engaging me as much as he was, I know he likes our players.
