The finalists for the 2014 Gold Glove Awards were announced on Thursday and third baseman Josh Donaldson and left fielder Yoenis Cespedes -- now with the Boston Red Sox -- represent the Oakland A's.
Players and coaches vote for Gold Gloves, and the winners at each position will be announced Nov. 4.
Donaldson has built a reputation as one of the better defensive third basemen in the game. Voting was conducted toward the end of the regular season, and the issue will be whether those voting looked past his high error total (23) and took into account the range and strong arm he displayed all season.
His .952 fielding percentage this year ranked eighth among qualifying AL third basemen. Seager led the league with a .981 fielding percentage.
Beginning last year, a sabermetric statistical element was added as part of the Gold Glove selection process, and Donaldson ranked high across the board in defensive sabermetric categories in 2014.
Orioles third baseman Manny Machado won the award in 2013.
Cespedes, who was shipped to Boston for Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes at the July 31 trade deadline, is facing the Royals' Alex Gordon, who has won three consecutive Gold Gloves, and the Indians' Michael Brantley.
Cespedes' .979 fielding percentage ranked sixth among qualifying AL left fielders. Gordon posted the league's best fielding percentage at .994.
Right fielder Josh Reddick, a 2012 Gold Glove winner and finalist last season, did not make the final three this year.
