The A’s cashed in their biggest remaining trade chip Tuesday, as the team confirmed the deal to send left-hander Brett Anderson to the Colorado Rockies for left-hander Drew Pomeranz and minor league right-hander Chris Jensen.
Pomeranz, 25, was the fifth overall selection in the 2010 draft with Cleveland but was dealt to Colorado in 2011. He has struggled thus far over parts of three major league seasons, going 4-14 with a 5.20 ERA over 34 appearances (30 starts). It stands to reason, however, that he’ll compete for a rotation spot with Oakland.
Jensen, 23, was 5-8 with a 4.55 ERA in 28 starts last season for Single-A Modesto.
Anderson, who appeared a cornerstone for the A’s after a strong rookie season of 2009, has made just 35 appearances over the past three seasons due to injuries, including reconstructive elbow surgery. He is 26-29 with a 3.81 ERA over five big league seasons.
