OAKLAND -- There obviously have been rosier days in the A’s clubhouse, but right fielder Josh Reddick is doing his best to lighten the mood.
On Friday, he showed up to the Coliseum with a chinchilla that he purchased at Petsmart. The furry little critter, which Reddick named Chuckie, sat in a cage by his locker before the game.
Reddick was thinking of buying a tortoise but settled on a chinchilla.
“I’ve never had a pet rodent of any kind,” he said.

Now Reddick is trying to charge fellow outfielder Billy Burns with the task of caring for Chuckie on the road.
“He’s trying to tell me he options out of it,” Reddick said. “I’ve never heard of a rookie having an option.”
Reddick also has decorated the clubhouse with a vintage, autographed wrestling robe from “Nature Boy” Ric Flair that he bought on E-bay. The light blue robe, complete with white feathers around the neck and sleeves, is hanging from the ceiling near his locker.
A little comic relief seems in order for a team that is 45-59 and saw three of its best veteran players dealt away before the trade deadline.
Continuing the wrestling theme, Reddick paid a classy tribute to the legendary “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, after news of Piper’s death at age 61 broke on Friday. Reddick changed his walk-up music to the same tune of bagpipes that Piper used to enter the ring to.
