Josh Donaldson was playing "old school" Mortal Kombat and watching the Golf Channel in Alabama before his mobile phone began "exploding" late Friday night.
The first text the former A's third baseman saw was, "Blue Jays?"
"First thing, I was like, 'yep, I just got traded'," Donaldson realized.
While he was initially taken aback by the news that he'd been shipped to the Toronto Blue Jays for Brett Lawrie and three prospects, it was a move he saw coming.
"There was definitely a lot of shock that had kinda sunk in at that time," the All-Star third baseman said on a conference call. "This was a little bit ahead of schedule, I was thinking, as far as being traded wise."
Donaldson, 28, acknowledged that he might not be an Athletic forever, understanding that a trade could be in his future.
He just didn't know it would be so soon.
Donaldson played in 158 games for the A's in 2014, finishing with 155 hits, 93 runs, 98 RBI and a team-high 29 RBI.
