The A's signed left-hander Brad Mills to a minor league contract and have invited him to major league spring training.
His name will resonate with Oakland fans. Mills, 29, was memorably purchased from the Milwaukee Brewers for $1 in June after starter Drew Pomeranz was sidelined with a broken hand. He went 1-1 with a 4.41 ERA in three starts for the A's before being designated for assignment in July. The Toronto Blue Jays claimed him off waivers at that point.
Mills provides some depth for a rotation that will feature a core of Sonny Gray, Scott Kazmir and Jeff Samardzija. The A's might be without two starters, A.J. Griffin and Jarrod Parker, when next season begins as both continue rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.
