This is the final part in a series that spotlights three 49ers-Giants matchups to watch Sunday, 10 a.m., at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
49ers LB Chris Borland vs. Giants RB Rashad Jennings
Tale of the tape
Borland (50): 5 foot 11, 248 pounds, rookie, Wisconsin
Jennings (23): 6 foot 1, 231 pounds, sixth season, Liberty
Borland figured to be relegated to special teams early in his NFL career after the 49ers selected him in the third round. But Borland will be needed on defense with Patrick Willis out for the season after opting for season-ending toe surgery and NaVorro Bowman’s return this season in doubt.
Jennings is expected to return to action after missing four games with a knee sprain. Despite his inactivity, Jennings remains as the Giants’ leading rusher. He has 396 yards with a 4.4-yard average and two touchdowns in five games. Jennings gives the Giants balance on offense.
“He’s worked hard to get back,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said. “He will give our team an outstanding lift.”
Borland has been outstanding in the past two game after a rough first start against the Denver Broncos. Borland recorded 18 tackles against the St. Louis Rams, then followed that up with a 17-tackle performance and a fumble recovery that led to the game-winning points against the New Orleans Saints. He is always around the ballcarrier, which should put him in close proximity to Jennings throughout the game.
