Whitner fined $21K for unnecessary roughness penalty

Donte Whitner was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty late in the 49ers' 35-11 win over the Rams last Thursday night.

He did not agree with the call, and voiced his displeasure on SiriusXM NFL Radio the day after.

"I think I’m just supposed to let them catch a touchdown now. I think that’s what the National Football League wants, but I’m not going to give them that. I’m going to continue to play physical, continue to hit the right way, lead with my shoulder, and I’m not targeting anybody’s head.”

Whitner was also asked if he would appeal any potential fine resulting from his penalty in the Rams game. His response: "Yeah, I’ll appeal it."

Well, expect an appeal soon because Whitner tweeted the following on Tuesday afternoon:

Whitner also argued a Week 3 penalty that stemmed from his hit on Indianapolis Colts running back Ahmad Bradshaw. He was penalized 15 yards for hitting with the crown of his helmet, but the NFL later admitted he should not have penalized for the hit.
