Linebacker NaVorro Bowman is expected to play Saturday night in the 49ers’ exhibition opener, coach Jim Tomsula said Tuesday.
“We’re taking the approach that Bow is back,” Tomsula said. “We’re just moving forward."
Bowman has not played in a game since he sustained the severe injury to his left knee in the NFC Championship game against the Seattle Seahawks in January 2014. Bowman was named first-team All-Pro in three consecutive seasons before sitting out all of last season.
Tomsula said the 49ers’ staff has talked about how to divide the playing time in the exhibition opener Saturday night against the Houston Texans.
He said the conversation begins with the starters playing for one quarter. But Tomsula said the 49ers might make adjustments to that plan during the course of the week leading up to the game.
Wide receiver Torrey Smith will get a veteran day of rest on Tuesday, Tomsula said. Receivers Chuck Jacobs and Dres Anderson, and defensive lineman Kaleb Ramsey will not practice due minor injuries or soreness, he said.
