Guard Mike Iupati, who was selected to the Pro Bowl three times in his five seasons with the 49ers, will now face his old team two times a season.
Iupati plans to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, a source confirmed Monday to CSNBayArea.com. As a member of the NFC West, Iupati will face the 49ers twice a season. He will most likely match up against former Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett, who last week signed with the 49ers.
The 49ers appeared to prepare last year for the loss of Iupati as a free agent this offseason with the third-round selection of guard Brandon Thomas, who sustained a torn ACL during a pre-draft workout.
Thomas is expected to compete for the starting job at left guard, along with Joe Looney and either Daniel Kilgore or Marcus Martin, whichever player is not the starting center.
Iupati's intention to sign with the Cardinals was first reported by ESPN.
