Vic Fangio would target Kyle Shanahan as offensive coordinator and Ed Donatell as defensive coordinator if he is promoted to head coach of the 49ers, a source said Thursday .
Fangio, 56, who served as Jim Harbaugh’s defensive coordinator for the past four seasons, interviewed for the 49ers’ head-coaching vacancy on Dec. 30. The 49ers’ defense ranked in the top five in the NFL in each of Fangio’s four season as coordinator.

Shanahan, 35, Mike Shanahan’s son, is out after one season as offensive coordinator of the Cleveland Browns. Owner Jimmy Haslam granted Shanahan’s request to be released from his contract with the Browns after reports surfaced this week that Shanahan wanted to leave due to friction between the coaching staff and the front office.
Mike Shanahan also interviewed for the 49ers’ job. Kyle Shanahan would also be expected to be named coordinator if Mike Shanahan became the 49ers' next head coach.
Donatell, the 49ers secondary coach in each of the past four seasons, had "a great interview" for Washington’s defensive coordinator position on Wednesday, according to a source. The 49ers granted Donatell permission to interview with Washington after blocking him for defensive coordinator opportunities after the 2011 and 2012 seasons with Tampa Bay and New Orleans.
The 49ers are interviewing Detroit defensive coordinator Teryl Austin for the head-coaching job on Thursday. On Friday, the 49ers are scheduled to meet with Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles.
