SANTA CLARA – The 49ers added another tight end to their 10-player practice squad after Vernon Davis and Vance McDonald sustained injuries Sunday night against the Chicago Bears.
Davis sustained a left ankle sprain and was seen on crutches after the game. He was scheduled for an MRI examination on Monday. McDonald sustained a right knee injury and did not play in the fourth quarter.
The 49ers signed tight end Xavier Grimble and cornerback Leon McFadden to the practice squad. To make room for Grimble and McFadden, the 49ers waived linebacker Shayne Skov and cornerback Chance Casey.
Skov, an undrafted rookie from Stanford, was re-signed to the practice squad after being among the 49ers’ final cuts to their original 53-man roster.
Grimble (6 foot 5, 255 pounds) joins a 49ers practice squad that already includes tight end Asante Cleveland. Grimble was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the New York Giants from USC. He spent the offseason and training camp with the Giants before being waived at the first cut-down day.
McFadden (5-10, 190) was originally selected in the third round (68th overall) of the 2013 draft by the Cleveland Browns from San Diego State. He appeared in all 16 games (two starts) as a rookie. The New York Jets claimed him off waivers, but he was released after just one game.
