Editor’s note: This article is part of an ongoing series in which we will highlight a collection of prospects in advance of the 2015 NFL Draft, beginning April 30.
Florida State, Cornerback
Weight: 194 pounds
Hands: 8 5/8"
Wing Span: 76 1/8"
Bench Press Reps: 12
Vertical Jump: 40"
Broad Jump: 11'
Positives: Can man up, play off-coverage, zone and also blitz from the edge or slot. Storms up like a missile attacking underneath throws and runs. Great pre-snap stance in man coverage; low and square with the receiver. Terrific recovery speed, showing the ability to catch up to the receiver and close on the ball. Long arms to reach in and obstruct the catch point. Asset defending fades in the red zone. Good instincts on vertical routes.
Negatives: Unpolished technique can cause him to miss the jam at times. His press at the line is more showy than it is effective. Awkward tackler with arms flailing out wide, taking bad angles. Does not wrap up. Tries to tackle everyone with the thump of his shoulder. Blitzed a lot, raising questions about his overall value in coverage. Can lose balance when defending comeback routes and back-shoulder fades. Inconsistent effort. Average route awareness.
49ers Insider Matt Maiocco's Take: The 49ers like their cornerbacks physical, and Williams has the kind of raw talent they could develop.
NFL comparison: Justin Gilbert (Browns CB)
