Positives: Big-armed quarterback with a solid frame that comes from an aggressive vertical offense at Baylor. Doesn’t always bullet it, though, as Petty can float it to his receivers, too. Has the arm strength to drive the ball deep down the sideline and hit difficult throws. One of the better-looking throwers in this class from a mechanical standpoint. Despite strong build, also possesses layer of mobility. Good field presence and command of the offense. Threw 62 touchdowns to just 10 interceptions over 26 games.
Negatives: Leaves a lot of plays on the field due to inconsistent accuracy and missed reads. Took the majority of snaps out of the shotgun in Baylor's one-read system. Might not be a fit in every offense. Not very elusive in the pocket. Negative plays will come when under duress.
49ers Insider Matt Maiocco's Take: The 49ers can always call up Jim Harbaugh, who worked with Petty before the draft, for an evaluation of how he’d fit as Colin Kaepernick’s backup.
NFL comparison: Joe Flacco (Ravens QB)
