SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers selected speedy wide receiver Bruce Ellington from South Carolina with the 106th pick of the 2014 NFL Draft.
College career: Ellington averaged 15.0 yards per reception over three college years. Last season, he caught 49 passes for 775 yards and eight touchdowns. He returned kickoffs in his first two seasons. Last year, he returned only three punts. He played three full seasons of college basketball, too.
Scouting report: “Ellington doesn’t play hesitant, displaying natural burst and smooth acceleration that makes him dangerous as a ballcarrier. As a two-sport athlete in college, he still has quite a bit of growing to do on the football field, especially with his route running and finishing toughness in contested situations. Ellington isn’t yet a finished product and will need time, but has the athletic traits, work ethic and football character that leads you to believe he can be an impact NFL player – solid top-100 prospect.” -- NFLDraftScout.com
How he fits: He ran an official time of 4.45 seconds at the NFL Scouting Combine, which makes him the fastest wideout on the 49ers’ roster. He is best-suited as a slot receiver. Playing time will be difficult to earn as a rookie, as he’ll have to beat out Steve Johnson, Quinton Patton and Brandon Lloyd to get on the field as the No. 3 receiver along with Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree.
