SANTA CLARA – The 49ers expect to be without cornerback Tramaine Brock and nickelback Jimmie Ward for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.
Brock is expected to miss a game or two with a hamstring strain. And on Thursday, 49ers defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Jimmie Ward will likely not play due to a foot injury.
“He sustained an injury in the game the other day with his foot," Fangio said of Ward at his weekly press conference. "Probably don’t expect him to play this week. And we’ll go from there.”
Ward sustained an injury to his right foot, Fangio said, the same foot on which he sustained a Jones fracture that kept him out of the entire 49ers' offseason program.
"Nobody’s told me that it’s a Jones fracture or anything," Fangio said. "I know it’s in his foot, the same foot that he injured prior. I don’t know the exact particulars of it.”
Perrish Cox will start at cornerback and take over Ward’s responsibilities as part of the 49ers’ nickel defense. Ward was the 49ers' first-round draft pick. The specifics of his foot injury are not known.
Chris Culliver will start at the other cornerback spot. Rookie Dontae Johnson could see extensive time on the outside on passing downs.
Leon McFadden, who was recently promoted from the practice squad, is expected to be in uniform for the game as the team’s fourth cornerback.
Fangio also said he does not expect outside linebacker Dan Skuta (ankle) to be available. The 49ers, however, will see the return of Aldon Smith from a nine-game suspension.
