The 49ers offense won't have to deal with John Abraham after the Cardinals placed the veteran linebacker on season-ending Injured Reserve on Friday, the team announced on its website.
Abraham left the Cardinals last Tuesday after sustaining a concussion in the team's season-opening victory over San Diego.
Head coach Bruce Arians had said that Abraham was contemplating retirement, wondering if he still has the fire to play the game.
But Arians indicated Monday that Abraham's absence and attitude had more to do with his headaches from the first "real big" concussion of his 15-year NFL career.
A two-time First-Team All-Pro, Abraham has 133.5 career sacks over 15 NFL seasons, averaging almost nine per year.
