The NFL fined 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree in the amount of $5,512 for throwing a football into the stands after scoring a touchdown Monday night against the St. Louis Rams.
It is the third time Crabtree has been fined for throwing a ball into the crowd. In the final home game of the 2012 regular season, Crabtree was fined $10,500.
He was also fined $5,000 in 2010 for throwing a ball into the stands at Wembley Stadium in London.
A player is not fined for handing the ball or tossing it to a fan, but the NFL considers throwing a ball into the stands a safety issue with the possibility that fans could fight for a ball or dive over one another in pursuit of a souvenir.
