SANTA CLARA – The 49ers on Friday signed free-agent inside linebacker Steve Beauharnais to add depth to a position group that has been short on numbers.
Beauharnais was a 2013 seventh-round pick of the New England Patriots. He later signed with Washington but was released after the draft.
Michael Wilhoite (leg) and Nick Bellore (illness) have yet to practice during training camp. Philip Wheeler has also missed time due to a muscle strain.
The 49ers created the roster opening on Thursday when they waived/injured offensive lineman Ben Gottschalk. The 49ers have one roster spot available after the release of outside linebacker Aldon Smith following his fifth run-in with the law since January 2012.
---The 49ers canceled their scheduled Sunday open practice at Levi’s Stadium due to poor field conditions, but coach Jim Tomsula said he is confident the field will not be an issue for the games. The 49ers’ first exhibition game is scheduled for Aug. 23. The field will be re-sodded after Taylor Swift’s final concert on Aug. 15.
“I don’t have any concerns about the field being ready for opening day,” Tomsula said. “We do the same thing every morning. It’s the field guys and the equipment guys. We have our meeting. They, quite frankly, recommended that the field was not ready for us to go back. They told us to go back to the practice field. So we’re going with that recommendation.
“It will be fine. There’s no question in my mind it will be a great surface when we play our game.”
---Tight end Garrett Celek (illness) and wide receivers Bruce Ellington (leg) and Issac Blakeney (leg) will be held out of practice, Tomsula said.
The 49ers will continue to monitor and limit the practice participation of outside linebacker Aaron Lynch, defensive lineman Darnell Dockett, safety Jimmie Ward and running backs Reggie Bush and Kendall Hunter.
Defensive lineman Arik Armstead (leg contusion) and safety Jaquiski Tartt will return to practice after missing a couple of days with a toe bruise. And Philip Wheeler (leg) will likely see reduced practice time as he returns to work.
