DENVER –- Cornerback Tramaine Brock, out since Week 1 with "turf toe," will return to the starting lineup Sunday night against the Denver Broncos.
Cornerback Chris Culliver and rookie defensive back Jimmie Ward were among the team’s inactive players due to injuries. Culliver sustained a hamstring injury late in the week after nursing a shoulder injury that limited him in practices Wednesday and Thursday. The team determined prior during warmups Sunday evening that Culliver would not be available to play.
Ward sustained a quadriceps strain Monday night in the 49ers’ 31-17 victory over the St. Louis Rams.
Brock and Perrish Cox will be the starting cornerbacks on Sunday night, with Chris Cook likely to come into the game in nickel situations. Rookie Dontae Johnson could also see some significant playing time. Cox will cover the slot receiver.
Brock made it through limited practices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday after being held out of practice for the previous five weeks. Cox replaced him early in the 49ers’ Week 1 victory at Dallas to an injury to the big toe on his right foot, and Cox has started every game since.
Right tackle Anthony Davis will make his second start of the season, as he is cleared to return to action after missing time with a knee injury. And Joe Looney starts at left guard in place of Mike Iupati, who is out with a concussion.
Rookie Chris Borland makes his first NFL start, as Patrick Willis is out of action with a toe injury.
