SANTA CLARA -- Wide receiver Bruce Ellington, who got off to a strong start in training camp, had a setback during practice Monday evening.
Ellington sustained a leg muscle strain late in practice while running a pass pattern. He appeared to be in discomfort and did not take part in a drill fielding punts from Bradley Pinion shortly thereafter. On Tuesday, coach Jim Tomsula revealed that Ellington would not practice in the team’s first scheduled padded on-field work later in the day.
The injury is not related to the hamstring strain that kept Ellington out of action through most of the offseason program, Tomsula said. The injury is to the other leg. It is not known how long Ellington will be sidelined.
In other injury news, Tomsula said offensive lineman Ben Gottschalk underwent a surgical procedure on his foot. The extent of the injury was not immediately known.
