The 49ers on Friday ruled running back Reggie Bush out of action for Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers due to a left calf strain.
Bush will remain in the Bay Area for rehabilitation instead of traveling with his teammates to Pittsburgh on Friday afternoon, coach Jim Tomsula said during his press briefing.
With Bush officially out of action, the 49ers will activate backup running backs Jarryd Hayne and rookie Mike Davis. Hayne will remain as Carlos Hyde’s primary backup, offensive coordinator Geep Chryst said on Thursday.
Davis was not active for the 49ers’ 20-3 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night.
Also, wide receiver Bruce Ellington is nursing an ankle sprain, Tomsula said. His status for Sunday’s game is uncertain.
