SANTA CLARA – Running back Reggie Bush, whom the 49ers envisioned being a big part of the team’s offense, was sidelined in the first quarter of the season opener with a calf injury.
The 49ers announced that Bush would not return Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings.
Bush was injured on a play in which he was stopped for no gain on a third-and-one play. His only other rushing attempt of the game went for 8 yards.
Carlos Hyde and Jarryd Hayne were the only other active running backs for the 49ers on Monday. Rookie Mike Davis was declared as one of the 49ers’ seven inactive players.
Hayne was active for the game, but his NFL career got off to a forgettable start when he muffed a punt for a turnover near midfield. The 49ers' defense tightened, however, and the Vikings did not score. The game was scoreless at the end of the first quarter.
