OAKLAND -- The Warriors on Tuesday fired coach Mark Jackson after three years on the job, the last two of which ended with postseason losses.
The move was not a surprise, as Jackson's status had been unstable for months, maybe longer.
But on Tuesday Jackson met with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Bob Myers and the decision was made to terminate Jackson, who had one season left on his contract.
“It’s never easy to make a decision of this nature,” Myers said in a press release. “Mark has accomplished many good things during his three years with the organization, including his role in helping elevate this team into a better position than it was when he arrived nearly 36 months ago. We’re appreciative of his dedication and commitment since his arrival and are extremely grateful for his contributions. However, as an organization, we simply feel it’s best to move in a different direction at this time.”
“Mark Jackson has had a big impact on the improvement of our team and the success that we’ve had over the last couple of years,” Lacob said. “Nonetheless, we must make some difficult decisions in our day-to-day operations of the club and this would certainly qualify as one of those examples. We wish Mark the best of luck in his future endeavors and thank him for his contributions over the last three years.”
The Warriors are three days removed from losing a first-round playoff series to the Los Angeles Clippers. The series went the full seven games despite the absence of Warriors center Andrew Bogut.

Jackson's players came out strongly in favor of keeping the coach, with point guard Stephen Curry and power forward David Lee making public pleas on Monday.

But in the end, this was not about Jackon's relationship with his players. It was about his relationship with Joe Lacob, assistant GM Kirk Lacob, and, to a lesser extent, board member Jerry West.
Jackson's dismissal likely stems from a variety of factors, including questions about game strategy, his audacious manner and his fiercely independent approach to his assignment.
