Saying the team is further along than he expected and that he's "not displeased" with the ball security, Warriors coach Steve Kerr will continue to explore the roster.
When the Warriors take the floor for a preseason game against the Nuggets Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, the first-year coach will start Harrison Barnes at small forward for the second consecutive game.
In addition, he's also starting second-year center Ognjen Kuzmic the start at center, giving regular starter Andrew Bogut the night off.
"Don't tell Brian Shaw," Kerr joked, referring to the Denver coach. "I don't want him to change his whole game plan for this."
It's a rare opportunity for Kuzmic to play alongside the likes of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and David Lee. It's also a concession to what Bogut's veteran status.
"I'm getting old now and have had a banged up body the last couple years," Bogut said. "So I'll just take 'em off when I can get them."
Which is all the better for Bogut to enjoy the homecoming of Harrison Barnes, the man he constantly, and teasingly, refers to as the "Black Falcon."
Barnes grew up in Ames, Iowa, maybe a half-hour drive away from Des Moines. He enjoyed a storied career at Ames High, leading the Little Cyclones to consecutive state championships and a 53-game win streak.
One of his teammates at Ames, Doug McDermott, was a first-round pick in the 2014 draft and now plays for the Bulls.
Folks in Iowa wanted Barnes to "stay home" and go to Iowa State – which he might have, if he had come along four or five years later.
"I hear it, still, when I go back," Barnes said. "They're never going to let that go. It's something you always have to with.
"But people understand. At the time, Iowa State wasn't where it is now. They weren't going to the tournament. They weren't having big upsets. It was a team that was struggling to get there. That's why I made my decision to go to North Carolina."
Iowans will get their chance to show appreciation for Barnes, who will play on the Wells Fargo court for the first time since that last championship game.
LINEUPS/ROTATIONS: The only lineup changes are Barnes for Andre Iguodala and Kuzmic for Bogut.
INJURY LIST: Festus Ezeli (right shin inflammation) and G Shaun Livingston (right big toe surgery) made the three-game trip but are not expected to play.
