Shortly before 8:40am PT on Monday, July 4, Kevin Durant announced to the world that he would be joining the Golden State Warriors.
What did he do next?
“I didn't leave my bed, because I was like, 'Man, if I walk outside somebody might just try to hit me with their car or say anything negative to me,’” Durant told reporters on Monday in Las Vegas. “I just stayed in. I was trying to process it all.
"I wanted to be around family, and positive support. It felt different."
Several members of the Warriors who met with Durant in The Hamptons on July 1 later revealed that Durant was concerned how signing with Golden State would be perceived by basketball fans around the globe.
Durant understands that his decision hurt a lot of people in Oklahoma City. But he had to make a decision for himself and deal with the results.
“I mean I've been somewhere for so long and then to make a change like that (which) nobody knew was coming, that nobody didn't think I would do, of course I didn't know how it would be received afterwards," Durant added. "But at some point, I just said, 'Look man, life goes on. Life moves on, and I can't hide forever,' so I just had to face it...
“Having a chance to play in Oklahoma City for eight years, to see the city come together to support the team, I understand. I understand where they're coming from. It hurt me. I was hurt for a few days because I know that I hurt so many people in Oklahoma City by changing teams.
“Of course they're going to say what they have to say because everybody is emotional, and I understand that ... I can't really say anything to make them feel any different, but just still go out there and be who I am as a basketball player and as a person, and like I said, life moves on.”
The NBA is expected to release the 2016-17 schedule in late July or early August.
Last year, the Warriors only played in Oklahoma City once. It's possible they could be their twice next season.
What kind of response does Durant expect from Thunder fans when he takes the floor at Chesapeake Energy Arena?
“I haven't even thought about it," Durant answered. "I don't know. I'll just wait and see."
